Survey at Futala Lake Initiated to Clear Encroachments

In a significant move, the City Survey Department will conduct a detailed measurement of Futala Lake and its catchment area on February 24 and 25, marking the first such survey in a century. The initiative aims to identify encroachments, reclaim government land, and take legal action against unauthorized constructions. The survey will cover 63.42 acres, including Futala Lake (57.30 acres), managed by PWD Division One, Nagpur Circle, and 6.12 acres of catchment area owned by MAFSU.
Reports since 2022 have revealed extensive illegal encroachments, with unauthorized structures built and portions of government land converted into private property. The action was prompted by complaints from West Nagpur MLA Vikas Thakre, leading Guardian Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule to demand immediate intervention during a meeting on February 12, 2025. Officials from NMC, PWD, and MAFSU were reprimanded for inaction. Following this, PWD and MAFSU initiated legal proceedings and issued eviction notices to those involved in encroachments.
Legal Action Against Encroachments
The Gittikhadan Police have registered cases against Kamlesh Chaudhary, his mother Meena Chaudhary, and brother Mukesh Chaudhary under the BNS, Environment Protection Act, and MRTP Act. In 2023, an illegal restaurant linked to the Chaudhary family was demolished, and Meena Chaudhary was booked for unauthorized construction.
Survey to Begin on February 24
PWD Executive Engineer Abhijit Kuchewar confirmed the two-day survey will begin as scheduled on February 24, 2025. Authorities are committed to reclaiming Futala Lake’s land and restoring it to its original state. With legal proceedings already underway, this survey marks a critical step toward safeguarding Nagpur’s natural resources and addressing decades of encroachment.
