Porsche Crash Case: JJB Postpones Hearing on Treating Minor as Adult and Car Release to September 26

The Juvenile Justice Board (JJB) of Pune has postponed the hearing on three significant applications related to the Porsche crash case until September 26. These applications include a police request to treat the minor driver as an adult during the trial, as well as two defense pleas for the release of the impounded Porsche and the minor’s passport.
A hearing was scheduled for Wednesday regarding these applications filed by both the prosecution and defense. The defense sought the return of the Porsche and the minor’s passport, while the police were expected to present their stance on these requests. Following that, the defense was set to counter the police’s arguments. The JJB has also received various assessment reports concerning the minor.
Recently, a Pune court denied bail applications from the minor driver’s parents, as well as from two doctors, Dr. Ajay Taware and Dr. Shrihari Halnor, both associated with Sassoon Hospital, and two middlemen, Ashpak Makandar and Amar Gaikwad. This tragic case involves the deaths of two IT engineers from Madhya Pradesh, Aneesh Awadhiya and Ashwini Koshta, both aged 24, who were killed when the Porsche, driven by a reportedly intoxicated 17-year-old, collided with their motorcycle on May 19 at Kalyani Nagar Junction. After the incident, the minor was presented to the JJB on the same day, where the police sought his custody and requested that he be tried as an adult.
The JJB, which was operating with only one non-judicial member instead of its full panel, initially denied the police’s requests but granted bail to the minor under certain conditions, including writing an essay and undergoing traffic safety education. The Pune police have since challenged this decision, leading to the case being referred back to the JJB for reconsideration under the Juvenile Justice Act. Following their investigation, the police submitted a final report against the minor on June 18, and on July 26, they filed a preliminary chargesheet against seven individuals, including the minor’s parents, Taware, Halnor, and the two middlemen, who allegedly conspired to alter evidence to undermine the investigation.
