IMD Urges Pune Residents to Stay Hydrated Amid Sweltering Heat and Humidity

On Monday, Lohegaon’s automatic weather station registered a scorching 42.2 degrees Celsius, marking the highest maximum temperature recorded this season. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warnings about the increased risk of heat stroke and related illnesses as Pune district endures what is technically classified as hot and humid conditions.
Shivajinagar also experienced a significant rise in temperature, reaching 40.2 degrees Celsius, the highest maximum recorded at its automatic weather station this season. Similarly, Koregaon Park was notably hot, with temperatures climbing to 41.1 degrees Celsius.Temperatures have been rising since Sunday, with Monday being one of the hottest days of the season. Notably, Lohegaon’s weather station is situated within the Air Force base and tends to report higher temperatures than other areas, partly due to its proximity to the busy Vimannagar area and ongoing construction. On the other hand, Shivajinagar’s station, located on the Agriculture College premises, recording over 40 degrees Celsius highlights the prevailing heat intensity.
The IMD has warned of successive heat waves affecting regions such as Gujarat, Delhi, Chandigarh, Punjab, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, and East Rajasthan. A heat wave is declared when the maximum temperature exceeds 4.5-6.4 degrees Celsius above normal in the plains.Although Pune is not currently experiencing a heat wave, Anupam Kashyapi, former head of weather forecasting at IMD, noted that the city is facing hot and humid conditions.
This is defined by the central weather forecasting department as a situation where the maximum temperature exceeds 3 degrees Celsius with high humidity levels. This combination can be particularly harmful, as individuals may neglect to stay adequately hydrated. The IMD advises residents to avoid going outside between 11 AM and 4 PM and to ensure they hydrate regularly. These hot and humid conditions are expected to persist over the coming days.
