Nagpur Roads Set for Improved Repairs with New SOP Guidelines

Residents of Nagpur, who have long endured problems from frequent digging and potholes, may soon experience some relief. The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has implemented a stringent Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for road repairs as part of the AMRUT 2.0 project, following the installation of sewer lines for the Pohra River Pollution Control Project.Approved by Municipal Commissioner Abhijit Chaudhari, the SOP outlines a detailed process for digging, pipe installation, area refilling, and completing road repairs. Each step will require a 95% compaction level to ensure quality, which will be monitored by the Project Management Consultant (PMC).
The SOP also specifies repair guidelines for different types of roads. For bituminous roads, repairs will be conducted in layers, including 250mm of granular sub-base (GSB), 150mm of wet mix macadam (WMM), and 70mm of bitumen. In the case of cement concrete roads, the structure will involve 200mm of GSB, 100 to 150mm of dry lean concrete, and M-40 pavement quality concrete (PQC), with mandatory curing processes.Contractors will be required to upload five geo-tagged and timestamped photos at each stage of the project—covering bedding, pipe laying, partial refilling, full refilling, and final resurfacing.
Payments will only be processed after these photos are submitted. Moreover, adherence to safety and environmental standards is crucial, including the installation of barricades, signage, personal protective equipment (PPE), and pedestrian pathways. Any violations of the SOP may lead to work rejection, penalties, or requests for rework. The NMC views this initiative as a significant stride toward addressing citizens’ grievances by ensuring accountability and quality in road repairs.
