Submerged History: Pandav-Era Kambareshwar Temple Re-Emerges as Bhatghar Dam Level Plummets to 6% in Pune

A stunning confluence of history, faith, and ancient engineering has captured the attention of historians and locals in Pune. As water levels at the Bhatghar Dam dropped significantly to just 6 percent of its total capacity, the ancient Kambareshwar Temple emerged entirely from its watery grave.

Believed by historical researchers and local folklore to date back to the Pandava era of the Mahabharat, this resilient stone structure spends roughly 10 out of 12 months completely submerged beneath the reservoir’s surface, revealing itself only during the peak dryness of late May.

Inside the Submerged Sanctum Sanctorum

Despite being locked away in total darkness underwater for most of the year, the structural integrity of the shrine remains remarkably intact.

The temple houses a self-manifested (Swayambhu) Shivalinga, a beautifully carved idol of Goddess Parvati, and a stone sculpture of Nandi Maharaja seated directly before her.

In an unusual physical phenomenon, even when the surrounding dam water completely recedes, the Garbhagriha (sanctum sanctorum) remains filled with knee-deep water.

Devotees and travelers currently visiting the site wade into the cool waters of the inner chamber to touch the ancient stone idols and seek blessings.

Architectural Mastery Baffling Modern Engineers

The design and material composition of the centuries-old temple continue to surprise contemporary engineers, given its ability to withstand immense, fluctuating hydro-static pressure for decades.

The structure features a unique dual-material design blueprint:

Built using a lightweight but durable mixture of limestone, specialized sand, and baked bricks.

Carved out of massive, interlocking heavy stones capable of anchoring the structure against intense underwater currents.

Directly in front of the entrance lies a collection of ancient rocks and Veergals (Hero Stones), which are traditional memorial stones detailing historical sagas of ancient warriors, further validating the site’s historical antiquity.

A Fleeting Window for Exploration

While the constant shifting of the reservoir’s tide has caused minor superficial wear and tear over the years, the foundation and load-bearing pillars remain as unshakable as they were centuries ago.

This rare glimpse into India’s structural past is highly time-sensitive. With the arrival of the southwest monsoon on the horizon, the Bhatghar Dam reservoir will rapidly replenish, completely submerging the Kambareshwar Temple back into its ten-month aquatic slumber.
