With the traditional two-letter vehicle registration series under the MH-12 (Pune) jurisdiction rapidly running out, the Pune Regional Transport Office (RTO) has pivotally decided to introduce a new alphanumeric registration series for all new vehicles.
The RTO has discarded a previously considered three-letter alphabetical format in favor of this alphanumeric system, which promises a significantly larger pool of unique combinations. The revised proposal has been submitted to the Maharashtra State Transport Department, with official administrative clearance and implementation expected within the next few weeks.
Why the Shift to Alphanumeric?
The decision stems from a massive, steady surge in vehicle sales across Pune, particularly in the two-wheeler and passenger car segments. According to the latest RTO data, Pune currently boasts a massive vehicle population of over 43.55 lakh registered vehicles, which includes:
- Two-Wheelers: ~29.89 lakh
- Private Cars: ~9.20 lakh
- Goods Vehicles: ~1.56 lakh
- Remaining share: Auto-rickshaws, buses, taxis, tractors, and ambulances.
At present, the Pune RTO is issuing numbers under the ‘ZG’ series. Because the MH-12 code has been utilized for decades, the remaining two-letter iterations are projected to wrap up completely in the coming weeks. While the RTO initially consulted the National Informatics Centre (NIC) to implement a three-letter series (e.g., AAA to ZZZ), internal assessments revealed that an alphanumeric system offers far greater long-term sustainability and flexibility.
Technical Integration via VAHAN Platform
Transitioning to the new format will require backend system overhauls. The RTO will implement structural modifications across:
- The centralized VAHAN vehicle registration software.
- High-Security Registration Plate (HSRP) generation systems.
- Associated digital databases managed by the transport department.
These technical updates will commence immediately after the state government issues the official notification.
What This Means for Vehicle Owners
A senior RTO official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, reassured the public that the transition will be entirely administrative:
“Pune is registering a very high number of new vehicles every month… alphanumeric series would be a more sustainable solution. Once approval is received, the required software changes and operational procedures will be completed. Vehicle owners need not be concerned, as the transition will be seamless and existing registration numbers will remain unaffected.”
Once finalized, the new alphanumeric format will strictly apply to fresh vehicle registrations, while all existing vehicles on Pune roads will continue to retain their current numbers without any mandatory changes.
