Pune Porsche Crash: One Year Later, Victims’ Families Question Delay in Fast-Tracking Case

Pune—A year ago, a tragic accident involving a speeding Porsche claimed the lives of two young tech professionals, Anish Awadhiya and Ashwini Costa, in their 20s. The incident not only devastated their families but also sparked a national conversation about road safety and accountability. The case gained significant media attention after it was revealed that the luxury vehicle was allegedly driven by a 17-year-old juvenile who was under the influence of alcohol. Following the accident, a series of events unfolded that appeared to protect the young driver.Despite the passage of twelve months, justice remains elusive for the victims’ families. Anish and Ashwini’s families continue to grapple with their loss, while the juvenile’s father, a developer, and two doctors involved in the case are still in custody.
The boy’s mother has been released on interim bail.In the early hours of May 19, 2024, the Porsche, allegedly driven by the intoxicated teenager, struck Awadhiya and Costa as they rode their motorcycle in Pune’s Kalyani Nagar area. Although the juvenile was detained, he was granted bail within hours by Juvenile Justice Board member L N Danavade, with lenient terms that included writing a 300-word essay on road safety. This decision ignited public outrage. In response to the backlash, police sought a review of the bail order, leading to the juvenile being sent to an observation home, though the Bombay High Court later ordered his release.
Further investigation revealed allegations that the boy’s blood samples had been swapped with those of his mother to conceal his intoxication. This led to the arrest of his parents, two doctors from Sassoon General Hospital, and several others.Om Awadhiya, Anish’s father, voiced his frustration over the slow progress of the trial, stating, “A year has passed, but the trial is being prolonged. Our son is gone; nothing can compensate for that loss. However, justice would send a strong message against drunk driving and the impunity that money and power can bring.”He emphasized the emotional toll the past year has taken on their family, expressing their desire to see the perpetrators punished.Currently, the minor’s father and the implicated doctors, along with several accomplices, are in jail related to the alleged sample tampering.
