Wheels Roll Again: Long-Awaited Ramdaspeth Bridge Opens Partially, Easing Traffic Woes

wo-wheelers and three-wheelers can now use the bridge, offering relief to commuters; full opening expected by March end.

Nagpur finally breathes a sigh of relief as the wait for the Ramdaspeth bridge ends! After two years of traffic snarls and detours, one side of the newly constructed bridge was opened for two-wheelers and three-wheelers on Thursday evening. This partial opening marks a significant milestone in easing congestion in the city’s crucial east-west link.

The original bridge succumbed to the Nag River’s fury in August 2022, leaving commuters facing constant detours and delays. But now, the first vehicle rolled off the new bridge near Buty Hall, symbolizing a return to normalcy.

While the joy of reconnection is evident, the bridge is only partially open for now. NMC officials, led by Additional Municipal Commissioner Sunil Lahane and Chief Engineer Rajiv Gaikwad, have restricted traffic to two and three-wheelers to avoid congestion until the second phase of construction is complete.

This cautious approach is understandable considering the bridge is still under construction. Of the 43 planned girders, only 26 have been placed. However, work on the remaining ones is progressing swiftly, aiming for completion by March end. Additionally, the slab work, approaches, tarring, and retaining wall construction are also underway.

Despite the partial opening, commuters couldn’t hide their excitement. This bridge serves as a vital artery for the city, and its closure had significantly impacted their daily lives. With the partial opening, travel time is expected to decrease, and traffic flow will improve in the mid-section of Nagpur.

The project’s total cost is Rs 8 crore, and the complete opening by March end promises to bring even greater relief to Nagpurians. This infrastructure project highlights the city’s commitment to improving connectivity and alleviating traffic woes, ensuring smoother commutes for all. While the wait was long, the reopening of the Ramdaspeth bridge marks a positive step towards a more efficient and accessible Nagpur.
