Violence Breaks Out in Mahal Following Rumors; Police Take Swift Action

Nagpur: The Mahal area experienced significant violence on Monday evening after rumors circulated following the burning of an effigy of Aurangzeb. The incident escalated into arson, stone-pelting, and vandalism, resulting in injuries to several police personnel and civilians. In response, the police implemented baton charges and fired over 100 tear gas shells to restore order.Earlier in the day, 
Rightwing organizations organized a demonstration near the Shivaji statue in Mahal. During the protest, an effigy of Aurangzeb was set ablaze, along with other items, inciting panic throughout the city. Shortly after, a crowd gathered outside the Ganeshpeth police station, demanding action against the protesters. By 7 PM, rioters began pelting stones and setting vehicles on fire near Chitnis Park, damaging hundreds of vehicles as the mob attempted to approach the Shivaji statue. The sudden outbreak of violence led to chaos, prompting senior police officials, including Commissioner Dr. Ravinder Kumar Singal, to swiftly arrive at the scene. Fire brigade personnel were also deployed to control the flames.Despite police appeals for calm, the rioters continued their rampage, forcing law enforcement to take decisive action.
As police launched baton charges and deployed tear gas, the miscreants fled toward Chitnis Park. Several police officers and firefighters sustained injuries and were subsequently hospitalized.The police have since apprehended multiple suspects hiding in narrow alleys. Heavy security remains in place across Mahal and other sensitive areas of the city to prevent further unrest. Authorities have urged citizens to disregard rumors and maintain peace.
