Tragedy Strikes as Pune Software Engineer Falls to His Death in Tamhini Ghat

Lost in the Abyss: A Tragic Tale of a Software Engineer's Fatal Plunge at Tamhini Ghat

PCMC/Raigad, January 28, 2024: In a devastating incident on Thursday evening, Pranay Pawar, a 30-year-old software engineer hailing from Kalewadi, Pune, met a tragic end when he fell 600 feet off a cliff at Tamhini Ghat. The horrifying incident occurred as Pawar was en route to Mahad to attend a religious function, marking a somber turn of events for his family and the local community.

Local residents were the first to raise the alarm, having discovered an abandoned bike, a backpack containing a laptop and documents, and a cellphone strategically placed on the safety wall of the ghat. The incident took place within the Mangaon police jurisdiction of Raigad, prompting concerned citizens to alert the authorities immediately.

Responding promptly to the distress call, a seven-member rescue team, led by Assistant Police Inspector ND Lahange and supported by Constables RS Pawar and others, arrived at the scene. The rescuers faced a challenging terrain as they descended approximately 600 feet to locate Pawar’s lifeless body, entangled in a tree in a precarious area. The difficult operation was complicated by the fact that the body was 50 feet away, making direct access a formidable task.

To retrieve the body safely, the rescue team ingeniously employed anchor hooks attached to the victim’s clothing, lifting him to a more secure position. Sushil Kasare, one of the rescuers, highlighted the critical role of a tree in preventing further tragedy, stating that without it, the body could have plummeted another 600 feet into the gorge. The intricate rescue operation, conducted with the assistance of the Garudmaachi rescue team, concluded past midnight, ensuring the dignified retrieval of the deceased.

“The victim’s persistently ringing cellphone on the safety wall helped us establish contact with his wife and family members. The exact circumstances leading to the incident are currently under investigation,” shared ND Lahange, assistant inspector of the police.

Authorities revealed that Pawar was on his way to his hometown in Mahad to reunite with his mother, who had recently arrived there. The deceased leaves behind his wife, also a software engineer, whom he married just a year ago. The couple had been residing in Pune with the victim’s family.

The tragic incident has sent shockwaves through the community, prompting reflections on the importance of safety measures and responsible behavior, especially at popular tourist spots. As the investigation unfolds, friends, family, and the community at large mourn the untimely loss of a promising software engineer, leaving behind grieving loved ones and a community grappling with the fragility of life.
