The busy Pune–Manmad railway line, known for heavy passenger and freight traffic, is undergoing a major upgrade as officials have started installing high-capacity tracks capable of handling a strength of 550 GMT (Gross Million Tonnes).Hemantkumar Behra, spokesperson for the Pune railway division, explained, “We are deploying high-quality 60-kg, 90 UTS (Ultimate Tensile Strength) rails with a 550 GMT capacity along this route.
These rails are designed to carry heavy freight loads efficiently and will significantly reduce track fractures. With this upgrade, trains will be able to run at speeds up to 130 kmph in the near future.”Currently, track replacement is underway between Puntamba and Kanhegaon stations using the Plasser Quick Relaying System (PQRS)—an advanced technique that allows faster track laying with minimal disruption to train services. Remarkably, railway authorities replaced tracks over a nine-kilometre stretch within just 35 days.
The work is being carried out during planned traffic blocks to ensure rail operations continue smoothly, minimizing inconvenience to passengers. Officials estimate that with these high-capacity rails, the tracks will not require replacement for at least 15 to 20 years.Passengers have welcomed the initiative enthusiastically. Kunal Viraje, a daily commuter, said, “The Pune–Manmad route often faces delays due to maintenance.
If these new tracks reduce disruptions and improve speed, it will be a huge relief for regular travellers.”Sunita Kamble, another passenger, added, “Safety is our biggest concern when travelling by train. Knowing that stronger, modern tracks are being installed boosts our confidence in the railways.” Stay tuned to know more about it and others only with us and if you have anything to share do comment below and share your thoughts.
