The Maharashtra Government has announced a public holiday on December 2 in connection with the nagar parishad and nagar panchayat elections across Pune district. Voters in the designated poll-bound areas will receive a paid day off to exercise their franchise. However, this holiday does not apply to the entire district.
Where the Holiday Applies
According to the government resolution (GR) issued on Friday, the paid holiday will be granted only in the 18 nagar parishads and nagar panchayats of Pune district where voting is scheduled.
- Employees working in these polling areas will be entitled to leave with full pay.
- The GR further clarifies that citizens living in polling areas but working in non-polling areas will also receive a paid holiday.
- District Collector Jitendra Dudiemphasized, “On December 2, there will be a public holiday primarily in rural areas of these 18 local bodies, not in the cities.”
Where the Holiday Does NOT Apply
- Residents and workers within the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC)and Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) limits will not get a holiday.
- Urban offices, commercial establishments, and institutions in these city areas will continue to operate as usual.
This means while rural polling zones get the day off, city areas will function normally.
What’s Closed
- Offices located within the poll-bound nagar parishad and nagar panchayat jurisdictions.
- Workplaces employing staff from polling areas—even if the office itself is outside these zones.
- Both government and private employees in polling areas will receive paid leave as mandated by the GR.
- Schools and colleges in rural poll-bound areas are also likely to observe the holiday, unless separate instructions are given by their administrations.
Thus in the end, December 2 will be a day off for many in Pune’s rural election zones, while urban centers remain open and operational. Stay tuned to know more about it and others only with us and if you have anything to share, do comment below and share your thoughts on it.
