Pune in Limbo: Officer Transfers Cripple PMC Workflow

Pune Grapples with Workflow Issues as Key Officials Transferred

Pune, Maharashtra – March 22nd, 2024: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is experiencing disruptions in its workflow due to a recent wave of officer transfers implemented in accordance with the Lok Sabha election code of conduct. Today, the Maharashtra government transferred Deputy Commissioners Santosh Warule and Asha Raut, along with Chetna Kerure from the Sports Department.

These transfers follow the Election Commission’s directive mandating the rotation of officers who have served in a district for more than three years. Notably, this reshuffling comes on the heels of the recent transfer of Additional Commissioner Vikas Dhakne, leaving Ravindra Binwade as the sole senior Additional Commissioner remaining in the PMC.

The timing of these transfers couldn’t be more inopportune. With the fiscal year ending on March 31st, contractors are facing delays in bill approvals and project payments due to the scramble to meet deadlines. The sudden change in leadership and redistribution of responsibilities have further exacerbated the existing chaos within the PMC.

Adding to the woes, a recent departmental review meeting convened by Commissioner Rajendra Bhosale exposed a lack of clarity amongst senior officials regarding their respective departments. The Commissioner expressed his dissatisfaction and urged officials to improve performance, particularly regarding the controversial issue of tree felling within the city.

The combined effect of the officer transfers and performance concerns paint a worrying picture for the PMC’s ability to function smoothly in the lead-up to the upcoming elections.
