Pune Firm Supplying Counter-Drone Tech to MoD Alleges Data Theft by Ex-Employee; Investigation Launched

The Pimpri Chinchwad Police have initiated an investigation following allegations of data theft by a former employee of a Pune-based private firm that specializes in critical counter-drone technology for the Ministry of Defence. The individual, who left the company unexpectedly last year, is accused of transferring sensitive data from a company computer to his personal email account. Preliminary findings from the police indicate that no technical specifications of the firm’s products were compromised in the incident.
A First Information Report (FIR) was filed at the MIDC Bhosari Police Station last week after the firm’s finance director lodged a complaint. The company, located in the MIDC Bhosari area, provides counter-drone and radar technology to the Ministry of Defence and various security agencies across India. The FIR identifies the former employee, who worked in the accounts department from October 2022 until mid-2023, and is based in Delhi.
According to the FIR, the former employee had both office and remote work arrangements, utilizing a company-issued laptop. He last logged in on July 28, 2023, and after failing to return to work, the company sent multiple emails and reminders, which went unanswered. During this time, he retained possession of the laptop containing sensitive information, including the company’s digital signature, GST and income tax details, contact information, and the director’s login credentials. After repeated attempts to retrieve the laptop, the former employee eventually returned it by courier.
Upon inspection, it was discovered that he had sent financial data to his personal email address using the company computer. An officer involved in the investigation stated, “The company had filed a case against the former employee, and the court directed the registration of an FIR. Our initial investigation indicates that no technical details of the company’s products have been compromised, and the allegedly stolen data relates to financial matters. We will issue a notice to the former employee to appear for questioning.”
