The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has suspended municipal water supply across the city every Thursday starting October 15, 2026. The decision comes as rainfall deficits triggered by the El Niño phenomenon led to lower water reserves in the Khadakwasla dam system compared to typical annual levels.
Government Guidelines and Conservation Directives
The PMC’s measures follow an October 6 directive from the state Water Resources Department instructing local administrations to implement micro-planning for dam reserves. To mitigate drought impact and ensure adequate drinking water until the next monsoon, the state mandated a minimum 10% reduction in water usage.
Under the updated guidelines, the PMC has enacted strict conservation rules across Pune:
- Commercial & Construction Restrictions: Tap water usage for commercial construction activities is completely banned, and vehicle washing centers will remain closed until the next monsoon season.
- Public & Private Amenities: Supplying municipal drinking water to private and public swimming pools, as well as private and PMC-maintained gardens, must cease immediately.
- System Repairs: Citizens are urged to inspect and repair leaking taps, pipe connections, and flush tanks across private households and public facilities.
Managing Available Reserves
As of October 12, water levels across the Khadakwasla reservoir network remained significantly reduced. Officials emphasized that structured water management is essential to prevent severe shortages through 2027, appealing to residents to practice prudent daily water consumption.
