The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) is set to launch a comprehensive 40-day citywide property tax recovery drive from August 20 to September 30. Approved on August 12 by Municipal Commissioner Dr. Vipin Itankar, the campaign aims to collect long-pending dues and strengthen civic revenue. Officials across all 10 municipal zones have been instructed to enforce strict action against chronic defaulters to recover a total outstanding target of ₹1,279.05 crore. This sum includes ₹683.66 crore in principal property tax, ₹586.70 crore in late-payment penalties, and ₹8.69 crore in pending warrant proceedings.
The drive encompasses approximately 3.24 lakh properties across commercial, mixed-use, residential, and open-land categories. Specifically, 2.35 lakh built-up properties account for ₹472.12 crore in arrears, while 88,918 vacant plots and land parcels hold ₹211.55 crore in unpaid taxes. Recovery efforts will prioritize high-value defaulters in the initial phase, focusing on 624 commercial, 404 mixed-use, and 709 residential properties each owing over ₹5 lakh. Smaller default cases will be systematically addressed in subsequent stages.
To enforce compliance, civic recovery teams are authorized to invoke Rule 42 of the Maharashtra Municipal Corporation Tax Rules. Failure to settle outstanding amounts may result in demand warrants, property attachments, or the seizure of movable assets.
To streamline the collection process, Mayor Neeta Thakre distributed 100 digital point-of-sale (POS) machines to tax collectors on Independence Day. These devices allow property owners to make immediate digital payments upon receiving demand notices, eliminating the need to visit civic offices. Additional Municipal Commissioner Milind Meshram noted that the digital payment facility will offer greater convenience, speed, and transparency, particularly benefiting senior citizens and women.
Progress throughout the 40-day campaign will be monitored on a daily basis. The NMC strongly urges all property owners to clear their dues promptly to avoid additional penalties, legal enforcement, or asset attachment proceedings.
