A recent civic health campaign in Nagpur has unveiled a silent epidemic among the city’s women—hypertension. Organized by the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) under the Union Health Ministry’s ‘Swasth Nari, Sashakt Parivar’ initiative, the drive ran from September 17 to October 2, 2025, screening 66,468 residents across 16 urban primary health centres.
The results were striking: 49,364 individuals, including a large number of women, were identified with high blood pressure, making hypertension the most prevalent health concern detected. Medical officers cautioned that most cases were previously undiagnosed, highlighting how this “silent killer” often remains unnoticed until it leads to serious complications.
The campaign also conducted extensive screenings for other conditions, including 24,346 diabetes tests, 23,053 cancer screenings targeting oral, breast, and cervical cancers, 5,941 anemia checks, 5,447 tuberculosis tests, and 4,266 sickle cell screenings.
At the same time, 310 official health cards were issued during the drive.Pregnant women and children also received attention, with 3,084 pregnant women examined and 3,271 children immunized. Health counseling on lifestyle, nutrition, and preventive care reached 62,894 citizens, reinforcing the importance of holistic well-being.Further achievements of the campaign included generating 1,706 Ayushman Bharat and Vay Vandana Yojana health cards, collecting 232 units of blood, and securing 258 pledges from individuals and organizations through the Nikshay Mitra initiative to support tuberculosis patients with nutritional and medical aid.
As per NMC officials, they emphasized that these findings serve as a crucial wake-up call for Nagpur. Hypertension, once viewed as a disease of the elderly, is increasingly affecting women in alarming numbers. The campaign’s message is clear: the health of a family depends heavily on the well-being of its women, and ignoring this puts entire households at risk.
