Nagpur’s longest elevated bridge, connecting Kamal Chowk to Dighori, witnessed its first major traffic jam barely twenty-four hours after its grand inauguration. The congestion occurred on Sunday evening after large groups of youngsters gathered at the Ashok Stambh rotary to take photographs, shoot social media reels, and experience a “first ride” on the newly opened structure.
The traffic standstill lasted for nearly half an hour, with long queues of vehicles piling up on all approach roads leading to the rotary. Groups of young visitors gathered around the illuminated Ashok Stambh landmark, while several motorists parked their two-wheelers and cars along the flyover lanes to capture pictures. This unauthorized parking severely restricted lane capacity and brought moving traffic to a crawl.
The newly opened Dr. Hedgewar Flyover has quickly become a popular attraction for local residents eager to explore the city’s newest infrastructure project. However, the sudden influx of recreational visitors turned the busy rotary into a major bottleneck during peak evening hours. Heavy commercial vehicles, including long-route buses and water tankers, struggled to navigate through the crowded stretch and tight turns.
The infrastructure project was jointly inaugurated on Saturday by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Union Minister Nitin Gadkari. Built to ease long-standing commuter delays across the city, the elevated corridor’s rapid crowding has raised immediate concerns regarding traffic regulation and local enforcement.
Within just one day of opening to the public, proper traffic management and strict control over roadside parking on the elevated bridge have emerged as urgent priorities for local authorities to ensure smooth daily commutes.
