Nagpur Witnesses Increase in Marital Disputes: Love Marriages Encounter Greater Challenges, Data Shows

Data from the Bharosa Cell highlights that love marriages in Nagpur encounter more hurdles compared to arranged marriages. Over the last eight years, around 5,000 couples who defied societal norms to marry for love sought police intervention to resolve marital disputes. On the other hand, 11,087 individuals in arranged marriages also approached the Bharosa Cell for help during the same period.
Between 2018 and 2024, a total of 5,995 couples in the city opted for mutual separation through the Family Court, translating to an average of two divorces per day. Experts identify ego clashes, suspicions of infidelity, financial stress, and household disputes as primary reasons for these conflicts. However, counselors emphasized that timely intervention and counseling can help couples navigate these challenges successfully.

Why Love Marriages Face More Struggles

Senior Police Inspector Seema Surve from the Bharosa Cell explained that love marriages often come with unique difficulties. “Couples frequently approach us with complaints against each other. Promises made before marriage are often broken, leading to mistrust and disputes. Additionally, the lack of parental support in love marriages adds to their struggles,” she shared.Counselor Pranali Pawane highlighted that early marriages contribute significantly to marital problems. “Young couples often lack the maturity to handle responsibilities, which leads to conflicts over finances and doubts. In inter-caste marriages, family opposition can further worsen the situation,” she explained.
