Nagpur Police Criticized for Intelligence Failure After Massive Prahar Janshakti Protest Blocks Wardha Road

The Nagpur City Police faced severe backlash following a significant intelligence and planning failure as a massive protest by Bachchu Kadu’s Prahar Janshakti Party brought traffic on Wardha Road (NH-44) to a standstill on Thursday. The agitation, organized under the “Maha Elgar Morcha” banner demanding a full farm loan waiver, triggered one of the worst traffic jams the city has seen in recent memory.
Officials revealed that police intelligence did not anticipate Kadu and his thousands of supporters would stage their demonstration directly on the national highway. This oversight caused a gridlock stretching over 20 kilometres, leaving commuters, buses, and even ambulances stranded for hours.
The blockade severely disrupted movement in and out of the city, including vital routes to Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport.Though police attempted limited traffic diversions, these measures quickly failed as protesters reportedly moved tractors to block alternative routes, crippling contingency plans.
Sources acknowledged that inadequate advance preparation and poor crowd assessment exacerbated the chaos. The situation escalated to the point where the Nagpur Bench of the Bombay High Court intervened, ordering protesters to vacate the highway immediately and restore normal traffic flow.
By the time order was reinstated, thousands of residents and travelers had endured lengthy delays, sparking widespread criticism of the police’s preparedness and intelligence capabilities in managing large-scale public protests.
