Millions for Tankers, Empty Taps: Pune’s Water Crisis Despite Full Dams

Soaring Costs and Infrastructure Issues Plague City's Water Distribution System

Pune residents are facing a peculiar paradox – despite having four dams brimming with water, the city is shelling out a staggering ₹80 crore annually on water tankers to address water scarcity. This information comes to light as the Pune Municipal Corporation’s (PMC) water department grapples with a broken water distribution system.

The crux of the issue lies in unequal water access. Records from the PMC reveal a whopping 4.34 lakh water tanker trips undertaken in the past year alone, with each trip costing the corporation ₹2,000. While these tankers provide temporary relief to some areas, a significant portion of the city continues to face water shortages.

Adding another layer of complexity is the recent merger of 34 villages with the PMC in 2017. Previously under the purview of the Pune Metropolitan and Regional Development Authority (PMRDA), these villages were promised water supply by the PMRDA. However, complications arose when the responsibility shifted to builders during the construction boom of high-rise buildings in these areas. Many builders reneged on their obligations to establish proper water infrastructure, leaving the villages high and dry. This mismanagement by the PMRDA has now become the PMC’s burden, further increasing the demand for water tankers.

The situation is particularly alarming during the summer months, highlighting the PMC’s struggle to bridge the gap between dam water and household taps. This exorbitant expenditure on water tankers signifies a critical need to upgrade Pune’s water infrastructure and ensure equitable distribution across the city.
