Pune Metro Expansion: New Lines and Stations
The newly approved additions include Line 4 and Line 4A as part of Phase-2:
- Line 4: Connecting Kharadi – Hadapsar – Swargate – Khadakwasla stations.
- Line 4A: Connecting Nal Stop – Warje – Manik Baug stations.
Daily ridership on the combined Line 4 and 4A is projected to reach approximately 4.09 lakh passengers by 2028, rising to nearly 7 lakh in 2038, 9.63 lakh in 2048, and over 11.7 lakh by 2058.Specifically, the Kharadi–Khadakwasla corridor is estimated to carry 3.23 lakh passengers in 2028, growing to 9.33 lakh by 2058. Meanwhile, the Nal Stop–Warje–Manik Baug spur line is expected to increase from 85,555 passengers in 2028 to 2.41 lakh by 2058.
Timeline and Total Expansion
The combined Line 4 and 4A will span 31.636 km with 28 stations, connecting IT hubs, commercial areas, educational institutions, and residential neighborhoods across East, South, and West Pune.The project is slated for completion within five years, with an estimated cost of ₹9,857.85 crore. Funding will be jointly provided by the Central Government, Maharashtra Government, and international bilateral/multilateral funding agencies.The Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation (Maha-Metro) will oversee implementation, including all civil, electrical, mechanical, and systems work.
Significance of the Decision
Line 4 and 4A form a “vital part” of Pune’s Comprehensive Mobility Plan (CMP). Upon completion, these lines will seamlessly integrate with existing and approved corridors at Kharadi Bypass and Nal Stop (Line 2) and Swargate (Line 1), enhancing connectivity and urban transit efficiency across the city.
