Industries in Butibori MIDC and residents of Butibori town are set to benefit from piped natural gas supply starting next month. The Mumbai–Nagpur gas pipeline operated by Gas Authority of India Limited (GAIL) is nearing completion, with gas charging expected to commence by the end of this month. Although the project initially aimed for an August launch, it faced delays due to various factors.
According to a media report, Deepak Sawant, president of HCG Nagpur, stated that his company has already laid pipelines across Butibori MIDC, Butibori town, and surrounding areas. “We are yet to install meters as gas has not started flowing in the GAIL pipeline. Once gas reaches here, we will collect deposits from consumers and install meters. Then they will get regular gas supply,” he explained.Sawant further revealed that in the coming months, piped gas supply will also extend to areas like MIHAN, Khapri, and southern Nagpur city.
With a continuous, round-the-clock supply, consumers will no longer need to depend on multiple LPG cylinders. Consumption will be metered monthly, and billing will be done accordingly. The Mumbai–Jharsuguda pipeline, which passes through Nagpur, is part of GAIL’s ₹28,000-crore, 1,700-km infrastructure project. This network also includes a spur from Nagpur to Jabalpur via Chhindwara.
While the western section connects Mumbai to Dabhol and Dahej terminals in Maharashtra and Gujarat, the eastern section links Jharsuguda to ports in West Bengal and Odisha.GAIL officials noted that the pipeline supports bidirectional gas flow, allowing Nagpur to receive gas either from Mumbai or from Jharsuguda on the east coast. The main pipeline has a diameter of 24 inches, ensuring ample capacity for the region’s growing energy needs.
