Bhide Bridge to Reopen for Traffic as Diwali Shopping Crowds Surge in Central Pune

With Diwali shopping crowds swelling in Pune’s mid-city areas, the city police’s traffic control branch has decided to reopen Bhide Bridge for vehicular traffic starting October 11. The bridge, located near the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) building, had been closed due to construction work on a pedestrian cable bridge connecting to the Deccan Metro station.
The surge in shoppers has caused significant congestion and traffic jams in central Pune, making it necessary to temporarily reopen Bhide Bridge to ease the pressure on surrounding roads.Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic), Himmat Jadhav, announced in a press release that the bridge will be accessible to vehicles daily from 6 am to 10 pm beginning October 11 and will remain open until further notice.
Authorities have urged commuters to adhere strictly to traffic rules during this period. In addition to reopening the bridge, the traffic control branch has imposed restrictions on heavy vehicles to prevent congestion and reduce the risk of accidents along the Mumbai-Bengaluru highway between Katraj and Kivale.Starting October 15, heavy vehicles will be banned on this stretch from 8 am to 11 am daily.
Vehicles coming from Satara, Sangli, and Kolhapur must not cross the Shindewadi toll post during these hours.Similarly, heavy vehicles will be prohibited from traveling between Kivale and Katraj Lane from 5 pm to 9 pm. Vehicles entering Pune from Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, and Raigad are advised not to cross Wadgaon Phata during this evening restriction.
Exceptions to these bans include vehicles carrying essential goods such as fuel, milk, and agricultural products. These measures aim to improve traffic flow and ensure safer commutes during the busy Diwali shopping season.
