Air Force Station Pune to Host Inaugural Sekhon IAF Marathon on November 2

Air Force Station Pune will organise the first-ever Sekhon Indian Air Force Marathon on November 2, honoring the valor, courage, and ultimate sacrifice of Flying Officer Nirmal Jit Singh Sekhon—the Indian Air Force’s only Param Vir Chakra (PVC) awardee. This marathon will be held simultaneously at 61 Air Force Stations across India.The event will commence at 5:45 a.m. at the Station Sports Ground in Lohegaon.
A press release from the Defence PRO, Pune, states,“The marathon celebrates the indomitable spirit of the Indian Air Force while promoting fitness, patriotism, and camaraderie. Participants will include serving personnel, veterans, families, and civilians from Pune and surrounding areas.”The race features three categories—21 km, 10 km, and 5 km—to accommodate runners of all ages and fitness levels, embodying the Air Force motto: “Touch the Sky with Glory.”
This marathon is part of a Pan-India initiative, simultaneously organised at 61 Air Force Stations. His Param Vir Chakra citation highlights his extraordinary bravery:
“On 14 December 1971, despite heavy enemy bombing at Srinagar airfield, Flying Officer Sekhon took off alone to engage multiple enemy Sabre aircraft. Though heavily outnumbered, he fought valiantly, damaging enemy planes before being shot down and killed.
